Committee Chair

Jim Norton

Administrative Secretary

Isabel Cantu

Howdy my name is Isabel Cantu, I am a committee member and serve as the Cub Scout Secretary for Pack 977.   I have been married to Omar Cantu for 28yrs and presently we live in Bryan.  I am a retiree of the City of Bryan, however presently I work for Texas A&M University.   We attend College Heights Assembly of God Church.  We have 2 children, Veronica Cantu 19/yrs old who is presently attending Blinn College and majors in Education; and Omar Cantu Jr. 10 yrs old.

I feel it is very important for parents to be involved in our children’s world.  I remained very active in my daughters’ activities serving even as a Chaperone for 4 years in the Bryan High Band and always making her concerts, recitals, softball, soccer, competition events, etc.

The thing that attracted me to Cub Scouts was/is being able to take part in the outings with my son.  I enjoy the parent involvement that is needed to help my son succeed with his activities, projects, etc.   Omar Jr. has been in Cub Scouts for 1 year, he recently was promoted to Webelo’s 2.  He has been very excited about Cub Scouts learning so much, he especially enjoys the interaction he gets from his Den Leader as well as the other Webelos members.

Charter Organization Representative

Dr. Bill Birdwell

I am married and have two children, Will (deceased) and Bonnie, and two grandchildren, Caroline (3) and William (10 months)

I'm a dentist.   Susan is a homemaker and community volunteer.

I am the Charter Organization Representative to the church for the pack and the troop;  I was an asst scoutmaster when Will was going through scouts from 1984-1992.  I also serve on the troop committee.   Wayne Clark (the 1st scoutmaster) and I reorganized Troop 977 in 1984 with the encouragement of Bishop Oliphant whose mission was to encourage the churches in the Texas Conference of the Methodist church to begin and charter scouting programs.

Will was an Eagle Scout, and so was I.  My dad was my asst. scoutmaster for Troop 84 in Hearne.  The Flags Across Bryan program which we initiated in 1994 provides funding for all scouting programs in the church and assists other scouting programs in the community.  It provided funding for the scout house which we located on church property in 1999.

I believe in scouting and the values it fosters for our children and am hopeful that our church and our scouting leaders can build a scouting program that will become the model for synergism in our community.  Not every boy can be a great baseball player, but all boys can be great scouts.  It is my hope and prayer that we can create the opportunities for greatness in every boy we bring into the pack.  With leaders such as yourself I know it can happen.  Thanks!   Bill

Membership Sub-Committee Chair

Omar Cantu, Sr.

Hello, my name is Omar Cantu and I am the Membership Committee Chair for the Cub Scout Pack 977 in the Sam Houston Area Council.

I served three years in the United States Army as a Military Policeman.  After completing my service in the US Army I became a police officer for the Bryan Police Dept for 12 years.  I am currently an agent for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC).

I am married to Isabel Cantu and have two children; Veronica Christine 19/yrs and Omar Jr. 10/yrs.  Omar Jr. is a Webelos Cub Scout and I will continue to encourage him to continue Scouting so that he can someday earn the rank of Eagle Scout.  I believe being an Eagle Scout will help Omar build character so that he can better serve God and his Country.

Pack Uniform Inspector

Bill Scott

Webmaster's Note: The PAck Uniform Inspector isn't an official position of the Cub Scout Pack, in that the Cub Scouts don't reognize it or provide any form of training or resources for such a "position". However, part o our strength at Pack 977 is utilizing our available resources that sometimes come from outside the Cub Scout box. Bill said we could pick what we wanted from below and put it on the site...we thought all of it was worth mentioning. Bille and his wife Estelle have been longtime supporters and participants in Scouts and our community...Thanks, Bill!

I was born at an early age.  Drank milk, and ate all sorts of stuff. Started school in San Tone, and continued at St Joseph's in Bryan......

I Joined the Boy Scouts in the spring after my 10th birthday. The pack Number was 64. Continued in Cubs getting just about all the Arrow Points that could be gotten for Wolf, Bear and Lion.

As soon as I was 12 I joined Troop 81 sponsored by the American Legion. Shortly before I got my Eagle the Knights of Columbus started a troop and one of my Catholic buddies in Tp 81 dad became the Scoutmaster.  So Bo and I moved over to TP383 and became Jr Assistant SM. My last year in high school gave me a chance to get into  Explorer Post 8 sponsored by the business men's bible class of the First Baptist Church.

The Scoutmaster of Tp 383 registered myself and his son all the time we were in college and I also was Asst Sm of troop 80 sponsored by the Bryan Lions Club.

While in the Army at Ft Polk I was Assistant Sm of the troop sponsored by the Ft Polk Officers Club.

After the Army I came back to Bryan and got involved on the district level eventually moving through - Camping committee, asst district Commissioner, District Chairman, district Commissioner.  I was advisor of Explore post 735 for twelve years, ASM of troop 102, Sm of Troop 1074, St Thomas Aquinas.

Cub Scout Day camp jumped up and got me and I have been a counselor since the mid 80's.

Now I am a Unit Commissioner and all round resource guy.  When someone needs help and they cannot find anyone they say, " Get Bill Scott, he has done that."

Eagle, District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver,Wood Badge- 3 beads- Beaver Patrol, St George (Catholic Church), Bronze Pelican (Catholic Church), St Christopher Emblem (K of C & Catholic Church).

When any one asks if I am still in scouting I say - "I am still Alive."
