Cubmaster

Todd Watson

I am a Senior Lecturer and Leader of the Urban and Community Forestry Program at Texas A&M University.  I have a wonderful wife, Linda, and three awesome kids, Allie, Becca, and Zach.  One of my passions is serving in various Christian ministries in our local church and elsewhere.  Scouting instilled values, a love of God, family, and country, and a desire to ”do my best“ and ”be prepared“ that have been foundations for my personal and professional life.

I came from a poor farming family in De Leon, a small town in central Texas.  Cub Scout Pack 37 was a big part of my life and was a lot more fun than hoeing peanuts.  I still fondly remember my Den Mother, Mrs. Wells, and my Cub Scout buddies.  Even after 35 years, I can vividly recall some of the great times that I had in Cub Scouts.  I even still have some of my crafts, pinewood derby plaques, and uniform.  Ask me how to make Scrumpdillyump, the first meal I ever cooked on a Cub Scout campfire.

I eventually moved up to Troop 37 in De Leon where I had one of the greatest Scoutmasters of all time.  I enjoyed many camping trips to Camp Billy Gibbons with Troop 37 and later Troop 14 when I moved to Brownwood, TX.  I was a Life Scout and went to Philmont three times.  Even though we live miles apart, many of my Boy Scout buddies have remained my lifelong friends.

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts have had a profound effect on my life.  I am very happy to be back in Scouting with my son Zach, who is a Bear this year.  I also enjoy working with all of the other boys who will one day be better men because of Cub Scouts and hand down this wonderful tradition to their sons.

Most folks know me as a technology guy--I've been in IT for 15 years, and currently sell Macs and do technology consulting on the side. Some know me as a music guy, as I lead worship at our church, and play various instruments. The most important folks to me, though, know me as a husband and a dad. I've done a lot of travelling, and we even lived overseas in Qatar for a couple of years, but I'm a fourth-generation Texan, so I always have to come back to the land of my childhood. Among my fondest memories are the times I spent Cub Scouting...I remember the pinewood derbies, merit badges, rocketry, camping, den meetings...what great times, and I still love doing all that stuff! Both of my parents were involved--Dad helped me build stuff, and Mom led our den meetings. My wife Janelle and I  want to continue the tradition with our son, Langston...and we're proud to be part of the larger Pack 977 family!

My favorite things tend to involve projectiles and/or loud noises, so if you notice dogs barking, arrows flying, guns firing, or rockets soaring, I'm liable to be somewhere nearby, with a big smile on my face!

I am married to Beth and Dad to three great boys, Kristofer, Andrew, and Nathaniel. Kristofer is currently a Wolf Cub Scout in Pack 977, and I also serve as the Pack Trainer for Pack 977. Beth is a part-time teacher at St. Michael's Academy and also runs the administrative functions of my business, Power Dinamiks!. We homeschool our children and have found Pack 977 to be the perfect complement to educating our boys.

I have been a professional trainer and motivational speaker for about a dozen years, and am really excited to give back to Scouts what I received. It was in Cub and Boy Scouts that I learned Leadership and the principles of the topics and presentations I make across the country, and I am glad that my sons are getting that same exposure.

I was a Life Scout and Chapter Chief of an Order Of The Arrow Chapter as well as a sub-committee chair in the OA Lodge. This was all in Ohio, in a District, Council, Chapter and Lodge that no longer exist, having been absorbed into a Mega Council in the late 1980s. I was also a member of a Law Enforcement Explorer Post - a program now known as Venture Scouts.

I am fortunate to have a Dad who was involved at every level of Scouting, from Den Leader through District Commissioner, and on to being a Professional Scouter when he became the Camp Ranger at McGimsey Scout Camp in San Antonio. I learned both sides of the Scouting Program, and I think that will help us in Pack 977 to continue to build a strong program for many generations. I was also fortunate enough to recruit for Pack 977 as Counselors my Dad and a long-time mentor of mine and friend of his, former Scout District Executive Stephen Wilinson who, along with Dad, implemented programs during my Scout days that simply made the whole world shine. And all they did was implement material that was produced for them by the national Scout office.

I hope to be able to give back some of that, and continue to foster the ideals of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouting and the Order Of The Arrow. You'll probably notice that I am passionate about the support we should receive from the District and the Council, and that I'm pretty sure we can make this Pack the best and largest in the Council by our sheer excitement. We'd be glad to have you join us. Come on along!
